Richard and Adelina Porto These photographs, recently deposited in the DPHS archive*, show Richard Bertram Ling and Adelina Porto dressed in their wedding clothes. They were married on 10th April 1920 in Alessandria, Italy. Two photographs are taken in a studio in England, possibly they wanted to dress in their wedding clothes for another picture, to remind them of their happy day in Italy. Richard, who was born in 1884, was a serving soldier in WW1 in the Army Medical Corps, and there he met Adelina in Italy who was a Red Cross nurse. Love blossomed and after the end of the war they married and Richard brought his new wife to England. They set up home in Westwood Hill, Sydenham and also had a home at Oak Farm, and later at Richard Bertram House, both on the Lewes Road, Danehill. Richard had trained as an architect and Adelina became a language teacher. She was awarded The Freedom of the City of London. Richard was also a member of The Worshipful Company of Gardeners, becoming the Master from 1952 until his death in 1954. The couple had two children, Ricardo Vivian and Mary Stella.
