The Archive has been built up over more than 45 years and is a comprehensive body of material relating to Danehill and other local parishes. The archive has taken many thousands of hours to produce by many people, but especially through the labours of three founder members, Phil Lucas and Hylda and James Rawlings. A small sample of material is uploaded to this site, but much more can be accessed by contacting the Society Archivist ([email protected]).
Document Archive The catalogue (sample entry, bottom of page) of maps and documents is a 42 page spreadsheet which you can download here. The archive includes many transcriptions and where necessary translations of numerous original documents (mainly the work of Hylda Rawlings) from medieval to more recent times. Map Archive Numerous Ordnance Survey, estate maps and Tithe maps of Danehill and the surrounding parishes. General maps of Sussex back to 1610 can be found on the Sussex Record Society website and the High Weald AONB website |
Past DPHS Magazines
Society magazines going back to the 1970's record the high quality research on the local area carried out by the society. Photograph Archive There is a vast number of photographs, mostly donated by members especially Derek Rawlings and Phil Lucas, but also old postcards. There are some series of photographs detailing the structure of some of the oldest houses. Oral History Entertaining articles based on a large number of interviews of long-standing residents of the community carried out by Jill Rolfe. The articles are published regularly in the Parish Magazine and more recent ones can be found here. Sport Archive This is a new page with just one entry so far on the 1923 Ashdown Forest Cricket Club kindly sent in by Graeme Baxter. Book Library The society has a small library of books, many now hard to obtain and a full set of volumes of the DPHS research magazine. The library is available at society evening meetings.
